Retaining Walls
Retaining walls that hold back Pittsburgh hillsides — and look good doing it.
Retaining Walls & Hardscaping in McMurray, PA
The South Hills are exactly that — hills. Retaining walls by Curbscapes hold back slopes, stop erosion, and turn unusable grades into flat, livable yard space. With our own excavation equipment and 20+ years of local experience, we build walls that are engineered for the site, not just stacked and hoped for.
Retaining walls also work as design features: seating walls around a patio, terraced planting beds, or a finished border for a driveway or walkway. Every wall we build includes proper base preparation and drainage behind the wall, because in Pittsburgh's freeze–thaw climate a wall without drainage is a wall that fails.

Retaining Walls Questions
Do I need a retaining wall?
If your yard has a slope that's eroding, a grade change you can't use, or soil pressing against a structure, a retaining wall solves it. Walls hold back soil, control water runoff, and create flat, usable space on hilly lots — a common need across the South Hills.
Why do retaining walls need drainage?
Water trapped behind a wall is the number one reason walls lean, crack, and fail — especially through Pittsburgh freeze–thaw winters. Every wall we build includes gravel backfill and drainage so water moves away from the wall instead of pushing against it.
Can a retaining wall be part of my patio design?
Yes. Seating walls, terraced beds, and step-integrated walls are some of the most popular features we build into patio projects, and they can be finished to coordinate with stamped or colored concrete.
